This project involved modifying a gate latch to enable people in wheelchairs to get through a gate unaided.  Manufactured from stainless steel, the modification provides for an extension arm on both sides of the gate which people in wheelchairs can reach.  The arm has two drivers which lift the tongues of the gate latch.  The drivers and arm are set up so that the remote latch is released enabling the person in the wheelchair to push the gate through and away from them.  This interesting design works very well.
For people in wheelchairs leaving the house, particularly by the backdoor, can present a major challenge.  In this case the backdoor is a sliding door and negotiating the raised doorframe unaided was impossible.  The solution consists of internal and external ramps and a hinged flap to cover and protect the doorframe and track.  Having opened the door and security screen, the flap is lowered into place and then the occupant is free to leave the house under his or her own steam, or battery power, as the case may be.
