Medication

Quadriplegics sometimes need devices that aid in the administration of medication.  In this case the person involved is also an insulin dependent diabetic and requires a carer to check blood sugar and administer insulin when appropriate.  But when spending time alone, the onset of a ‘hypo’ was a concern.  The immediate response for an able diabetic is to eat some sugar, often jelly beans.  So the challenge for TADACT was to devise a jelly bean dispenser.  The dispenser consists of a tube with an electrically activated slide.  Below the slide are two tubes, one to carry the jelly beans to the persons mouth, the other connected to a blow switch.  A puff on the small tube, initiates the blow switch which activates the slide mechanism and a jelly bean is released.  Need more than one jelly bean?  Puff again.
