Michael Milton
Paralympian and World Record Holder
As one of Australia's most successful athletes Michael Milton is no stranger to a battle. He lost his left leg to cancer at nine and, at just 14, competed in his first Paralympic Games. It was the start of an international ski racing career spanning 20 years with a total of 22 medals, 12 of them gold.
Michael is Australia's fastest ever skier and the world's fastest skier with a disability, clocking an amazing 213.65km/hr. He's also scaled Mt Kilimanjaro and twice walked the Kokoda Track.
After competing in his fifth winter Paralympic Games in 2006, Michael turned to cycling and, after six months of tough training, won an Australian title and set a new national record.
He had a new goal: to compete at the 2008 Beijing Paralympic Games. But, when he was again diagnosed with cancer in 2007 (this time in his oesophagus) China was forgotten as Michael realised he faced the biggest battle of his life and, with a daughter not even 12 months old, he simply had to win.
Less than a year later and after treatment and surgery, Michael made the Australian Paralympic cycling team for Beijing. As he boarded that plane he felt he'd already won. He finished with two top ten placings. Just over a year later Michael became a dad again.
Michael Milton knows what it takes to win.
